When cooking with cannabis all one really needs to know is how to make cannabutter or cannabis oil, leaf flour and alcohol extracts. These are the basis for almost all cannabis cooking.

Marijuana is a hardy plant that has evolved over many years. Part of this evolution is that the plant has made itself impervious to the rain and water. Because of this marijuana can’t be broken down or absorbed by water. But it can be broken down into fats and by alcohol.

Leaf flour is cannabis that has been ground, usually in a food processor or coffee grinder, to a fine powder. Leaf flour is mainly used for making Indian bhang drinks (drinks with milk or yogurt).

Cannabutter and cannabis oil are fats that have the psychoactive substance in cannabis (THC), transferred to them. Once made, cannabutter and cannabis oil can be substituted for regular butter and oil in almost any recipe. These techniques will teach you how to extract the THC into the butter or oil. Once you have your cannabutter or cannabis oil, you can then experiment with different recipes to find the best ones!

How to Make Cannabutter

You will need:
– 125g butter
– 1 ounce of leaf or 1 quart of bud.

Bring 3-4 cups of water to the boil in a large saucepan. Add the butter and stir until it has melted. Chop the leaf or bud and throw it in the pan along with the butter. Simmer on a low heat for at least 1-3 hours. At first the consistency on top will be very thin or watery. This should change and become thick and glossy when the cannabutter is ready.

Allow the liquid to sit and cool undisturbed. Place in the fridge to set after it has cooled. Once it has set, take the layer of cannabutter off the stinking brew. Keep the cannabutter refrigerated in an airtight container.

You can dump the brew, although some people prefer to drink it in something like a smoothie.

How to Make Cannabis Oil

You will need:
– 2 cups of olive oil
– 1 ounce of leaf or 1 quart of bud.

Follow the directions for cannabutter, but substitute the oil for the butter. Once ready strain through muslin or cheesecloth and save the wonderful green oil.

How to Make Leaf Flour

You will need:
– 1 ounce of leaf or 1 quart of bud.

Remove twigs and stems from the leaf or bud. Grind the leaf or bud in a coffee grinder or food processor until it resembles a fine powder. Allow the THC rich dust to settle and then strain through a fine sieve to remove any remaining coarse particles. Seal in an airtight container and store in the fridge or freezer.

How to Make Alcohol Extract

Alcohol extracts are made by steeping marijuana leaves in strong alcohol such as vodka or rum for at least a few weeks, although the longer you leave it the better. You can make a variety of marijuana liqueurs using this method.

What is known as a ‘hashish tar’ can also be made by evaporating off the alcohol from an alcohol extract. Be very careful when doing this! Alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water and is explosive. Never boil the alcohol on a gas stove or naked flame.

Always use an electric stove and make sure the room is well-ventilated. Most of the alcohol can be removed first by leaving the pot out in the hot sun, overnight in a sink filled with hot water or by boiling it in a double boiler.
