There has been a surge of interest in CBD in the past year. CBD, which is a non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant, comes with various important therapeutic qualities. A number of startups have entered the CBD business, and market it as a miracle treatment for intractable health conditions from chronic pain to seizures and tumors.

The attraction in CBD is also that it doesn’t make you feel stoned the way marijuana does. As much as people are beginning to learn about the medicinal properties of CBD, however, there is much mythology that the subject comes with.

What follows are 7 ideas about CBD that people often get wrong and the real facts about them.

1. The idea that THC is recreational and CBD is medical

CBD does come with medicinal properties. Many people believe, however, that THC, the compound in the hemp plant that is capable of causing a high, isn’t good for anything. This idea neatly classifies THC as recreational, and CBD as therapeutic.

In truth, while THC does cause a buzz, it comes with many medicinal qualities, as well. In one study published by the Scripps Research Center in California, for example, THC has been found to have uses in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

2. The idea that CBD is good and THC is bad

People who are opposed to the legalization of marijuana often attempt to paint CBD as the good, medicinal cannabinoid, and THC as the bad, stoner’s drug.

CBD gives you no high, and THC does. It’s important to remember, however, that while THC comes with psychoactive effects, it does have medicinal properties, too. There’s nothing inherently bad about THC.

3. The idea that CBD works best without THC


Many people believe that the fact that THC causes a high, means that it can have nothing positive to contribute. In truth, isolating CBD from the hemp plant and refining the THC out doesn’t make scientific sense.

When CBD is consumed along with THC, the two compounds work together in important ways. Preliminary research, for example, shows that CBD together with THC works better for brain tumors, breast cancer, and colitis than CBD alone.

4. The idea that psychoactive effects are bad

Many medical experts primarily see it as a medicinal plant, but one that comes with mild psychoactive effects. It’s also important to understand that the euphoria that cannabis delivers isn’t necessarily an incidental effect. In many ways, it is deeply intertwined with the medicinal qualities of the plant.

Vendors who sell CBD-infused hemp oil like to state in their advertisements that CBD oil and other products are legal to sell anywhere in the U.S., as long as they contain less than 0.3 percent of THC. The reality is a little more complicated.

The law doesn’t allow farmers to grow hemp for commercial purposes. But they do allow vendors to sell CBD products as long as the CBD is extracted from the seeds and stalks of cannabis plants, rather than their flowers and leaves.

Unfortunately, the seeds and stalks of the cannabis plant are poor sources of CBD. Most of the CBD in the cannabis plant resides in the flowers and leaves. When some vendors claim to sell CBD from cannabis seeds and stalks, it’s a doubtful claim.

6. The idea that the ban on THC doesn’t hurt the patient population


Many state legislatures have passed laws permitting low-THC CBD products. Other states only permit CBD products for specific illnesses. In reality, however, products that are rich in CBD, but not THC, do not help with every kind of health challenge. For instance, parents of children with epilepsy find that adding THC to CBD helps far more than using CBD by itself. Most people are not well-served by laws that exclude THC from CBD products.

7. The idea that all CBD is the same, no matter where it comes from

The hemp plant is a poor source of CBD, but it still is used for CBD extraction. Buying hemp-based CBD can be a problem, then, because it takes a great many hemp plants to obtain even a small quantity of CBD. The more the number of hemp plants that are used for a given quantity of CBD, the higher the concentration of soil toxins and impurities is likely to be. Buying CBD from cannabis may be a better idea.

While you could choose laboratory-refined CBD isolate for purity, it lacks in the many minor cannabinoid compounds that the cannabis or hemp plant comes with. You miss out on the bouquet of compounds that offer their own healing benefits.

CBD may be able to help treat a number of health conditions by itself. In some cases, however, users may be able to benefit from additional cannabinoids. Before you decide to get on the CBD bandwagon, it’s important to understand what the truth is about how cannabinoids really work. While products with THC aren’t legal yet, you should know how these compounds actually affect your health.
